The highly emotional work is also his first major chamber music composition. The public premiere in December 1855 was unfortunately not a great success, and so began a lengthy revision, before the trio reached its present form in the late 1850s. Smetana happily performed it all his life, but he was not to find a publisher until 1880, when one of his students unceremoniously invited the Hamburg publisher Hugo Pohle to perform the trio. Smetana specialist Milan Pospisil uses not only this first edition, but also the earlier sources for his edition, thus removing some inconsistency of the first edition in the Henle Urtext edition.
