He probably started composing in 1825 and dedicated the symphony in 1826 to the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna, which, however, was unable to perform due to its level of difficulty. It was not until 1828 that Schubert printed them after a short revision. The characteristic of this symphony is its beginning: the first eight bars of the memorable melody are only performed by two horns - a sound that was previously untypical for the beginning of a symphony.
