At the end of his manuscript there is the remark: 'Completed the 18th of October 1809'. Later he 'completely recast' the piece for bassoon, as he wrote. Friedrich Wilhelm Jähns, a researcher of outstanding merit, discovered the score of the Viola Concerto with the Berlin Kapellmeister Semler, who had inherited it from his father, the famous violist Franz Xaver Semler.
