About Bass
The bass is the anchor of almost every band, and choosing one is mostly about comfort and the sound you want. A four-string bass is the traditional starting point and suits most styles, while a five-string adds a low B string for extra range. Scale length matters too: long-scale basses are the standard, while medium and short-scale models are easier to reach around and suit smaller hands and players coming from guitar. Active electronics add tone shaping and output, while passive basses keep things simple. This collection includes basses from Ibanez, Spector, Aria, SX, J&D Luthiers, Epiphone, Sterling by Music Man and Yamaha, along with Bartolini and Aguilar pickups for upgrading a bass you already own. Think about the styles you play and how the neck feels in your hands. Not sure which suits you? Call our team on 03 4151 5751 or visit us in Footscray.
Common questions
Should a beginner choose a four or five-string bass?
Most beginners start on a four-string bass because it covers the vast majority of songs. A five-string adds a low B for extra depth, which suits some modern styles but takes a little getting used to.
What is scale length and why does it matter?
Scale length is the distance from the nut to the bridge, and it affects string tension, tone and how far you have to reach. Short-scale basses are more comfortable for smaller hands, while long scale is the standard for most styles.
What is the difference between active and passive bass pickups?
Passive pickups work without a battery and have a classic, natural voice. Active systems use a preamp for more output and on-board tone shaping, which suits players who want to fine-tune their sound from the bass itself.
Can I replace the pickups on my bass?
Yes. Many basses can be upgraded with aftermarket pickups, which is a popular way to change tone and output. Check that the size, shape and wiring match your bass before you buy.
