About Whistles
Tin whistles, also called penny whistles, are a light, approachable way into traditional music, and you can get a first tune out of one quickly. That’s why they turn up in Irish sessions, folk groups and school music rooms alike. The key of D is the traditional choice for Irish music, and a C whistle is a common second whistle. Clarke, Generation, Feadog and Waltons whistles are all in this collection, along with kazoos and slide whistles for lighter musical fun. When choosing, consider the key you need and whether you’d like a brighter or a mellower tone. Not sure which suits you? Call our team on 03 4151 5751 or visit us in Footscray.
Common questions
What key tin whistle should a beginner buy?
A D whistle is the traditional choice and the key most Irish tunes are played in, so it’s a safe first buy. A C whistle is a good second option for playing along with other songs.
What is the difference between a tin whistle and a penny whistle?
They’re the same instrument. Penny whistle is simply another name for a small six-hole whistle played by blowing into the mouthpiece.
Do I need to read music to play the whistle?
No. Many players start by learning the fingerings and picking up simple tunes by ear, and a fingering chart makes the notes easy to find. Reading music can come later if you want to explore more tunes.
Are kazoos and slide whistles played the same way?
No. A kazoo is hummed into, so your voice vibrates a thin membrane, while a slide whistle is blown and the pitch changes as you move the slide. Both are simple and fun, but they work quite differently.
