About Stools & Benches

The right seat changes how you play. Sitting at the correct height keeps your wrists level and your shoulders relaxed, which matters more the longer you practise. This collection covers piano stools, piano benches and keyboard stools from Crown, Hemingway, Linley, On Stage, Xtreme and Maxtone. It includes height-adjustable stools, hydraulic benches that lift with a lever, fixed-height digital piano stools, and duet stools wide enough for a teacher and student or two players side by side. Many piano stools and benches also have a storage compartment under the seat for music books.

To choose, start with height. If more than one person plays, an adjustable seat is worth it, because a child and an adult rarely suit the same height. A fixed-height stool suits a single player whose height is settled. For lessons and duets, a duet stool gives two people room without sharing a corner. For a stage keyboard on an X-stand, a folding keyboard stool packs down with the rest of the rig. Not sure which suits you? Call our team on 03 4151 5751 or visit us in Footscray. Stock at the store changes, so call ahead if you want to see a particular stool.

Common questions

How high should a piano stool be?

Sit so that your forearms are roughly level with the keys, with your elbows level with or just above the keyboard. Your feet should reach the floor or the pedals comfortably. An adjustable stool lets each player find that point.

What is the difference between a piano stool and a piano bench?

The names overlap. A bench is usually a longer seat, often with a storage lid. A stool is usually a single seat, and many have adjustable height. Both work for piano and keyboard.

What is a duet piano stool?

A wider seat made for two people, such as a teacher and student or two players sharing a piece.

Is a hydraulic bench better than a knob-adjusted stool?

A hydraulic bench changes height quickly with a lever, which helps when several people share one piano. A knob-adjusted stool takes a little longer to set and then holds its height well. Both do the job; it comes down to how often the height changes.
