About Drum Kits

A drum kit is the one instrument a whole band leans on, so it pays to match the kit to the player and the room. This collection runs from junior kits for young beginners through to full-size five-piece kits, with kits from DXP, TAMA, Peace and Brixton among them. Some kits arrive as a complete package with hardware, cymbals and a throne. Others are shell packs, which are the drums only, for players who already own stands and cymbals. Each listing says which it is, so check what is included before you compare two kits side by side.

For a first kit, think about who is playing and where. A junior kit is scaled down for young players, so they can reach the pedals and see over the toms. A full-size kit suits teenagers and adults, and it is the size most teachers and rehearsal rooms expect. If noise is a concern at home, plan for practice pads or mesh heads, or look at our electronic drum kits. Not sure which kit suits you? Call our team on 03 4151 5751 or visit us in Footscray. Stock at the store changes, so call ahead if you want to see a particular kit.

Common questions

What size drum kit should a child start on?

Start with a junior kit if the child cannot yet sit at a full-size kit with their feet flat on the pedals and the toms within easy reach. Once they can, a full-size kit lasts much longer, because it grows with them.

What is the difference between a drum kit and a shell pack?

A shell pack is the drums only: usually the bass drum, toms and sometimes the snare. A complete kit adds the hardware, cymbals and a throne, so you can start playing straight away.

What does five-piece mean?

It counts the drums, not the cymbals. A five-piece kit is a bass drum, a snare and three toms (two mounted toms and a floor tom).

Do I need anything else to start playing?

Sticks, a throne if the kit does not include one, and hearing protection. A practice pad is useful for quiet practice between sessions on the kit.
