About Guitar Amps
A guitar amp does more than make your guitar louder: it shapes the tone and feel of everything you play. The first choice is between a combo, with the amp and speaker in one cabinet, and a separate head and speaker cabinet, which is easier to mix and match as your rig grows. Valve amps are known for a warm, touch-responsive sound, solid-state amps are reliable and consistent, and modelling amps pack many amp sounds and effects into one box. Think carefully about wattage: a small amp is often plenty at home, while bigger amps suit bands and stages. Blackstar, Marshall, Laney, Vox, Orange, Mooer, Peavey, Strauss and Line 6 amps are all in this collection. Consider where you’ll play and the sound you’re after. Not sure which suits you? Call our team on 03 4151 5751 or visit us in Footscray.
Common questions
What is the difference between a combo and a head and cab?
A combo has the amplifier and speaker together, so it’s simple to carry and set up. A head and cabinet are separate, so you can pair different amps and speakers and expand your rig more easily.
How many watts do I need in a guitar amp?
A low-wattage amp is plenty for home practice and recording, and often sounds better at sensible volumes. More wattage helps you stay clean and heard alongside a loud drummer or on stage.
What is the difference between valve and solid-state amps?
Valve amps use vacuum tubes and are loved for a warm feel that reacts to your playing. Solid-state amps use transistors, run cooler and need less maintenance. Modelling amps recreate many amp sounds in one unit.
Do I need effects pedals with a modelling amp?
Not necessarily. Modelling amps usually include built-in effects and amp voices, which is handy for practice and smaller gigs. Many players still add pedals later to shape their sound.
