Description

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were written in 1785 and 1786 for the Parisian Masonic lodge Socit Olympique, which entertained a large orchestra and held regular concerts. Artful motivic work and playful wit characterize the six works, in which Haydn pays tribute to the sophisticated taste of the Parisian audience and the excellent skills of the musicians. Through print editions in Paris, Vienna and London, the six symphonies quickly became known and loved throughout Europe. Whether the Symphony No. 85 "La Reine" (The Queen) really was the favorite symphony of Queen Marie-Antoinette and therefore received her nickname, is controversial. He did not come from Haydn, but as early as 1788 he graced the title page of the printed edition of the Paris publishing house Imbault. The study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition and thus guarantees the highest scientific quality.
