Description

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were written in 1785 and 1786 for the Parisian Masonic lodge Socit Olympique, which entertained a large orchestra and held regular concerts. Artful motivic work and playful wit characterize the six works, in which Haydn pays tribute to the sophisticated taste of the Parisian audience and the excellent skills of the musicians. Through print editions in Paris, Vienna and London, the six symphonies quickly became known and loved throughout Europe. In the A major Symphony composed in 1785 Haydn considers the flute in the Adagio with concertante solo parts - perhaps with regard to the popularity of this instrument in France.
