Der sorgfltige hervorragend lesbare Notensatz ermglicht ein vertieftes Verstndnis dieses Schlsselwerks der 20er Jahre. "Die tote Stadt" war von Anfang an ein durchschlagender Erfolg. Bei der Urauffhrung 1920 war der Komponist Korngold der spter in Hollywood Karriere als Filmkomponist machte gerade einmal 23 Jahre alt. Das Libretto ein vielschichtig gebrochenes morbides Liebesdrama zwischen dem um seine verstorbene Frau Marie trauernden Paul und Maries Ebenbild Marietta beruht auf dem symbolistischen Kultroman "Burges-la-Morte" von Georges Rodenbach von 1892.
