In addition to the violin chaconne (HN 557) and the ten organ choral preludes (HN 1293), the prelude and fugue D major are among the best-known arrangements for piano that Busoni made of JS Bach's works. There are many indications that he regarded these three works as prime examples of his transcription technique. Since Busoni's Prelude and Fugue in the title explicitly designates "for the concert presentation," this already indicates an increased virtuoso claim. And indeed, Busoni demands from the pianist perfect mastery of the keyboard, always with the aim of transferring the sonorous organ to the piano effectively and yet in the spirit of Bach. All pianists, who finally want to pull out all the stops on the piano, are highly recommended for this urtext edition.
